Exhibition brings together 17 women artists inspired by spirit communication

An exhibition in New York brings together 17 women artists whose work emerged through communication with spirits.

Called Conduits of the Unseen, it is on view at Andrew Edlin Gallery in Tribeca.

One featured artist, Paulina Peavey, said a nonbinary spirit named Lacamo began communicating with her in the 1930s and inspired her work.

Curator Susan Aberth says the artists’ spirit messages call for an end to patriarchy and aim to make the world better.

The exhibition presents spirit-inspired art as a way to challenge social hierarchies, rather than only as an occult subject.

It also connects the artists’ practices to Surrealist “psychic automatism,” which André Breton adapted from mediums while removing its spiritual meaning.
