Japan’s government renews focus on green transformation and energy security

Japan’s government is renewing its focus on green transformation, or GX, which aims to shift the economy toward greener energy and industry.

The policy was promoted under former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and has continued under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Senior adviser Yuji Iida has worked on GX across both administrations.

In May, as tensions in the Middle East worsened, Iida urged people around him to give GX higher priority.

Takaichi’s stated goal is to protect Japan’s energy security in the short term.

The account describes GX as part of the government’s response to that security concern.

It does not detail specific measures or what the government plans to do next.
