Big 12 says replay wrongly gave BYU a touchdown against Arizona State
In a 27-20 win over Arizona State on Saturday, BYU was wrongly awarded a first-quarter touchdown, the Big 12 said afterward.
BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled near the goal line, and teammate Sione Moa recovered the ball and ran it into the end zone.
The conference said the ball should have stayed at the spot where Moa recovered it, with BYU facing third-and-goal from the 2-yard line.
Replay officials had first ruled the play dead, then reviewed it and awarded a touchdown.
Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham objected, saying the ball could be recovered but not advanced after the play was ruled dead.
The ruling gave BYU an early lead, but did not change the final result: the Cougars won by seven points.
The error adds to three straight weeks of disputed decisions in BYU games, though the sources give no further action planned by the Big 12.
