Mexican trucking faces risk of 40% diesel shortfall, shipping group warns

Mexico’s trucking sector could face a severe diesel shortage, according to Roberto M. Meillón Covarrubias, head of the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents.

He said 40% of the diesel used by the sector comes from the United States, which may not sell the fuel to Mexico because it needs it itself.

Meillón linked the tighter supply to conflicts in the Middle East, which he said have reduced fuel supplies.

The shortage could disrupt road freight, especially for companies without their own equipment and fuel tanks.

He also warned that transport rates could rise to levels seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said marine diesel sold for ships is also low quality.

Companies with their own fuel storage may be better prepared, but no specific timeline or response was given.

We are going to have a diesel shortfall, and 40% of the diesel we consume comes from the United States and this country needs this energy and is not going to sell it to you. So we are going to have a 40% shortfall and that is going to cause a crisis.
