Banks may give strategic industries extra points in debt reviews
South Korea has changed how banks assess large business groups with strategic-industry companies such as those in AI, semiconductors and batteries.
The groups can carry heavy debt because these industries require large investments in equipment and facilities.
Under the new rules, lead banks can add one to five points to non-financial assessments in regular reviews of major borrowers.
Each bank decides which industries qualify and how to apply the points.
A higher score could reduce pressure to sign financial-improvement agreements, cut debt or sell assets.
That may give companies more freedom to invest, while banks still have to manage the risk of actual financial distress.
The review system covers 42 business groups, whose total borrowing was 744 trillion won, and the sources give no further timetable for changes.
