Israel ends British consulate role in Jerusalem, leaving seven diplomats

Israel ended the British consulate’s role in east Jerusalem on October 8, allowing seven diplomats to remain in a limited capacity.

The change followed Israel’s September order to close the consulate in response to Western sanctions led by the U.K. over violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Twenty British diplomats, including the consul general, are leaving Israel, while the U.K. says the building will remain open as the U.K. Mission, Jerusalem.

The nearly 200-year-old consulate served British political and economic interests with Palestinians and provided consular services to British nationals in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.

The move reduces Britain’s diplomatic presence and support for Palestinians in a city whose sovereignty is disputed: Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital, while Britain and most other countries do not recognise Israeli sovereignty over east Jerusalem.

The U.K. rejects Israel’s legal right to enforce the closure and says it will work to build its presence back up.

It says it will not take reciprocal action while discussions are under way, and both governments have agreed to continue dialogue.
