Police warn of counterfeit 50-franc notes in Ticino

A man in the Locarno region of Ticino found a fake 50-franc note in his wallet.

The note looked very similar to a genuine one but was not identical.

Reports of other cases prompted questions, but Ticino police say they have no special reports from the area and describe cases elsewhere as isolated.

Switzerland’s Federal Office of Police, known as Fedpol, also says there is no unusual national increase in fake 50-franc notes.

The figures may not show every case because financial institutions often report detected counterfeits directly to Fedpol.

Anyone who receives a suspect note should not try to spend it, since passing counterfeit money is a crime even if they were deceived.

They should report it to cantonal police or hand it in at a bank, post office or police station, and it will be sent to Fedpol for checking.
