South Korea names six Gyeonggi sites for 76,700 new homes
South Korea has named six sites in Gyeonggi for 76,700 homes, using land now covered by greenbelt protections.
The sites are in Gimpo, Guri, Hanam, Uijeongbu and Goyang, all in the region around Seoul.
They are part of a government plan announced in August to build 100,000 homes on new public housing sites.
The government says the locations are within about five kilometres of Seoul’s boundary and have good access to the city, but no sites in Seoul were included.
The announcement comes as home prices continue to rise across the Seoul metropolitan area, and the government aims to signal that more housing is on the way.
It plans to use a faster process, with construction targeted to begin by 2030.
The sites include areas near existing or planned rail links, and some plans also include parks or a cultural complex.
