Krasnodar region raises readiness over threat of oil spill

On October 13, Krasnodar region raised its emergency readiness over a possible oil spill in the Black Sea.

The concern follows an October 6 attack by unmanned boats on the Liberian-flagged tanker Aframax Rio, which was carrying oil.

The fire on the tanker was put out the next day, but authorities say the situation could still lead to an oil spill affecting Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk.

Earlier checks had not confirmed pollution in the sea, and officials said no oil contamination had been detected.

Authorities will step up environmental monitoring and watch for dangerous conditions that could cause an emergency.

The regional authorities have also asked the Marine Rescue Service to help prevent oil products from reaching the shore.
