Brazil is projected to become the world's eighth-largest economy in 2027

The IMF projects Brazil will move into eighth place among the world's largest economies in 2027.

It estimates Brazil's gross domestic product, or GDP, will reach $2.8 trillion, putting it ahead of Italy and Russia.

Brazil is projected to rank 10th in 2026, with GDP of $2.65 trillion.

The IMF expects it to remain eighth through 2031, while the United States and China stay in first and second place.

This ranking measures the size of an economy, not how quickly it grows.

In separate forecasts, the IMF estimates Brazil's economy will grow 2.2% in 2026 and 1.9% in 2027, below global and emerging-economy averages.

The IMF points to high interest rates, less fiscal support and global uncertainty as factors weighing on growth.
