16.2% of Japanese firms report data leaks or suspected leaks

A survey of 1,328 companies in Japan found that 16.2% had experienced a data leak or a possible leak at some point.

The incidents included cyberattacks and human error, such as sending an email to the wrong person or responding to a fraudulent request.

Among large companies, 30.2% reported past leaks or suspected leaks, compared with the overall figure of 16.2%.

Across all surveyed firms, 5.5% said an incident had happened in the past year, while 14.8% said they did not know whether one had occurred.

That uncertainty matters because some companies may lack the expertise to detect or confirm a leak.

Some smaller firms also said staff and budget limits make protections difficult to put in place.

The survey was conducted online from October 9 to 14, and the findings point to challenges in both preventing leaks and knowing when they have happened.
