US envoys urged Ukraine to stop refinery strikes in Miami talks
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Ukrainian representatives in Miami on October 9 to discuss the war and possible deals involving Russia.
They pressed Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, reflecting Donald Trump’s demand, according to accounts of the meeting.
One account said the envoys offered nothing in return; another said they proposed using a diesel deal to encourage Russia to resume negotiations.
The accounts differ on what the US offered, but both describe pressure on Ukraine to halt the strikes.
Trump had announced that Russia would supply diesel to US and global markets after speaking with Vladimir Putin by phone.
Ukraine left without formally agreeing and signaled it could accept an energy truce if Russia also observed it.
The talks, scheduled for two days, ended after one day, and no agreement was announced.
