Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins dies at 64

Juan Atkins, a co-founder of Detroit techno, has died aged 64.

He was found unresponsive in a hotel room in Mexico City before a scheduled performance and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Atkins helped shape the genre with Cybotron and as Model 500, using electronic instruments and futuristic themes.

He grew up in Detroit and later met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, with whom he formed the Belleville Three.

His music helped establish techno as a major part of dance culture, and his track “Clear” was later sampled by many artists, including Missy Elliott.

Atkins also founded the Metroplex record label and used his lyrics to make social statements.

He continued performing and making music in recent years, including reforming Cybotron in 2023.
