Putin Places Japan Tobacco International’s Russian Assets Under State Management

Vladimir Putin placed Japan Tobacco International’s Russian assets under state management in an order signed on Thursday.

The order names Industrial Assets as the temporary manager of four JTI companies in Russia.

JTI has operated in Russia since 1999 and has up to 40% of the market, with brands including Winston and Camel.

The move follows other seizures of Western companies’ Russian assets, which Putin has described as a response to Western sanctions and frozen Russian state assets.

It comes as relations between Japan and Russia have worsened; some analysts say Moscow is targeting JTI because Japan supports Ukraine and joined G7 sanctions.

Putin says control could be returned under favorable conditions, but no timeline or conditions were given.
