Edgar Vázquez, accused of protecting Ryan Wedding, killed in Mexico

Mexican officials said Edgar Aarón Vázquez was killed in Naucalpan, in the State of Mexico, on Thursday, November 5.

Federal agents were carrying out an arrest warrant for organized crime when they said they came under fire; another person was also killed.

Vázquez, known as “El General” or “El Lic,” was the founder and leader of the Nuevo Imperio Cartel.

The US Treasury had sanctioned him in November 2025, accusing him of protecting Canadian former Olympic athlete Ryan Wedding in Mexico and using police contacts to find targets.

Wedding had lived in hiding in Mexico for more than a decade while leading a cocaine-trafficking network, and was later arrested and sent to the United States to face charges.

Vázquez was killed before the warrant could be carried out, while the US sanctions had also blocked three companies linked to him.
