IndyCar’s history was shaped by a split and eventual merger

The Indianapolis 500 is IndyCar’s best-known race, held each year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

American open-wheel racing drew major international attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Formula 1 champions competed in the CART championship.

The creation of the rival Indy Racing League in 1996 split the sport and damaged the championship.

CART later became Champ Car, which declined and was close to collapse by 2008.

The two series merged in 2008, after the split had already harmed the sport.

Today, IndyCar races on road, street and oval circuits, and its single-specification chassis is part of its reputation for spectacular racing.
