Turkish military chief meets Northern Cyprus leaders before planned talks

Turkish General Bayraktaroğlu met senior leaders in Northern Cyprus before a planned three-way meeting.

He was received by President Tufan Erhürman, parliament speaker Ziya Öztürkler and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, and also visited Turkey’s ambassador in Lefkoşa.

The planned talks bring together Erhürman, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin the following day.

The visits came amid increased contact by Holguin with both sides of the island.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had also visited Northern Cyprus two days earlier and stressed a two-state solution.

The timing has drawn attention to the prospect of new developments in the region.

The sources give no details of the planned meeting’s agenda or outcome.
