Devils beat Rangers 7-1 as Luke Hughes scores twice

The New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 7-1 at Prudential Center in Newark on Thursday.

Defenseman Luke Hughes scored twice, recording his first multigoal game in the NHL.

New Jersey scored four times in the second period after taking a 1-0 lead late in the first.

The Devils created chances by sending the puck behind the Rangers’ defense, pressing them and winning possession back.

Nico Daws made 18 saves for his first win of the season, as the Devils improved to 4-3 and extended their winning streak to two games.

The result was an encouraging example of the style coach Sheldon Keefe wants the team to repeat, though one game does not settle every question about the season.

The Devils say they need to keep committing to that approach as they continue their season.
