Three-part Matthew Perry documentary focuses on friends outside Friends

Netflix’s three-part documentary about Matthew Perry traces the actor’s life, career and addiction struggles.

Perry was best known for playing Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, whose five other main cast members do not appear as interviewees.

Instead, longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman share memories, alongside accounts from Perry’s family.

The series also uses Perry’s voice from interviews and discusses his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

Perry wrote about decades of drug abuse, alcoholism and depression, and people close to him describe seeing signs of his decline.

The documentary examines his addiction and death, including his death by drowning in a jacuzzi while under the effects of drugs.

The series is available on Netflix; the reviews differ on whether the absence of his Friends co-stars helps or weakens it.
