Experts call for stronger livestock breeding in China

At a livestock breeding meeting in Xinxiang, Henan, experts discussed how China can strengthen the breeds used to produce meat, eggs and milk.

China has many local animal genetic resources and has developed some of its own breeds, but experts said key gaps remain.

Some core breeding stock and equipment are still weak, and advanced methods such as genomic selection and gene editing are not being put to commercial use quickly enough.

Experts said stronger breeding matters because reliable supplies of meat, eggs and milk depend on good livestock breeds.

They called for better protection of local breeds and closer cooperation among researchers, universities and companies.

The goal is to develop more productive, disease-resistant and resource-efficient breeds and move research from laboratories to farms.

The meeting brought together experts to coordinate work on breeding challenges, but no specific next steps or deadlines were announced.
