Hajduk Split fans chant antisemitic slogans before Ajax match

Before a match involving Ajax and Hajduk Split, the Croatian club’s hard-core Torcida supporters marched toward the stadium in Split.

They chanted antisemitic slogans, including references to Auschwitz and Adolf Hitler.

The group also displayed a coffin bearing Ajax’s name, which was later kicked apart.

Police said they observed statements that could constitute criminal offences and opened a criminal investigation to establish the facts and identify those responsible.

Tensions had already been high in Split, where home-team hooligans reportedly sought out Ajax fans.

Ajax supporters had been advised to stay in their hotel rooms as much as possible.

Sixty people were detained after a confrontation between the two fan groups overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.

Further legal steps may follow as the police investigation continues.
