OpenAI plans to call data centres “AI compute campuses”

OpenAI is preparing a public campaign to shape debate about AI in the United States after the midterm elections.

One proposal is to call data centres, which house the servers used by AI systems, “AI compute campuses.”

The company is responding to public concern about these facilities, which critics say can be loud, disruptive and use large amounts of water.

The debate has also drawn attention from politicians in both major US parties, and some candidates have campaigned on the future of data centres.

OpenAI says communities should be able to hold companies accountable and receive lasting benefits from the projects, while the company also plans to discuss AI development safeguards called “speed limits” and economic benefits.

It also wants the United States to support international cooperation on AI rules, as political debate over the technology continues.
