Tving leads streaming apps in September installations after data breach
Tving recorded 814,483 new app installations in September, the most of any video streaming app in South Korea.
The Korean service’s total was up 43.8% from August and was a monthly record.
The increase returned Tving to first place after it fell to sixth in July and ranked fourth in August.
The rise came as Tving faced scrutiny over a major personal data breach affecting users, including people who accessed the service through partner logins or subscriptions.
A government-led investigation found that information from 39.54 million active, inactive, deleted and test accounts had been exposed, and identified weaknesses in security controls.
September compensation applications may have prompted app downloads as affected customers checked their eligibility, though this was suggested as a possible reason rather than confirmed.
Tving’s installation count does not show whether the people who downloaded it were new or returning users.

The total was a monthly record and 43.8 percent higher than August’s 566,538 installations.
Tving returned to first place for the first time in three months, despite ongoing controversy over a major personal data breach.
Industry observers said the start of applications for breach compensation may have contributed to the increase.
