Migros may consider reorganising its regional cooperatives

Swiss retailer Migros is reportedly considering a major reorganisation of its 10 regional cooperatives.

The possible options include reducing them to three or merging them into one, according to media reports; Migros says the claims are speculation.

Migros began a major transformation in 2024, selling several businesses and grouping its core supermarket operations in a new company.

The reports come as Migros and its discount chain Denner lose market share, while rivals Coop and Lidl gain ground.

Coop has also overtaken Migros in online grocery sales and its Naturaplan organic label grew while Migros’s label fell.

Migros says its longer-term work is about improving customer value and simplifying its organisation, and has set efficiency as a goal in its Vision 2035.

Chief Executive Mario Irminger is scheduled to address managers in Zurich on October 27, but Migros says the twice-yearly meeting is a regular event and has not confirmed a cooperative merger plan.
