Yusril urges Indonesia to classify illegal fishing and under-invoicing as corruption
Yusril Ihza Mahendra wants illegal fishing and mining under-invoicing treated as corruption in Indonesia.
He says both practices harm the country’s wealth and economy.
Yusril says losses from such practices reach hundreds of trillions of rupiah each year, and gave the example of mining output being under-reported.
He is calling for a revision of Indonesia’s anti-corruption law, which he says has not been amended since 2001.
The proposed changes would need to fit with updates to the country’s criminal laws, the UN anti-corruption convention and a bill on asset recovery.
President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a review of how corruption is defined, with academics, activists and other experts expected to take part.
