Mexico seeks investigation into Mexican man's death in ICE custody

Emiliano Andrade Covarrubias, 56, died in ICE custody at the Rio Grande detention center in Laredo, Texas.

He had been detained since June after returning to the United States from Mexico.

His family says he had diabetes and high blood pressure and was not given the medicine and medical attention he needed.

ICE says he received proper medical care, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Mexico is seeking a full investigation and plans to file a complaint with local prosecutors; its ambassador has also requested a meeting with ICE.

President Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico will strengthen consular protection for Mexicans detained in the United States.

His death is the 18th of a Mexican national in circumstances linked to ICE, according to Mexico's count.
