Brazilian man sentenced to 12 years in US money-laundering case

A US court sentenced Brazilian national Ygor Fokin Saviolli to 12 years in prison for his role in a money-laundering operation.

Prosecutors said the group handled more than $30 million in illegal funds, including money from drug sales.

The operation used couriers in different parts of the United States to collect cash and deposit it in banks across the country.

Those deposits were meant to hide where the money came from and help return profits to drug suppliers, including suppliers outside the United States.

Saviolli was described as financing the operation’s start and supervising the collection and laundering of large sums.

Five other defendants received prison sentences, ranging from one year and one day to seven years and 10 months.

The defendants pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, and the FBI investigated the case with assistance from the DEA; no further steps were specified.
