Mexican lawmaker calls for INE powers to support women facing violence
Mexican lawmaker Kenia López Rabadán questioned extraordinary powers held by the head of the National Electoral Institute, known as the INE.
She spoke during a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies with Women’s Secretary Laura Itzel Castillo.
López Rabadán argued that women in public office must still face scrutiny and answer for their actions.
She said institutional support should go to searching mothers, journalists and women who face violence.
She read a letter from activist Ceci Flores asking President Claudia Sheinbaum for a meeting to help find Flores’s son Alejandro Guadalupe Islas Flores.
The PAN lawmaker also opposed keeping the extraordinary powers for whoever next leads the INE.
The account gives no response to Flores’s request or next steps in the search.

What people are saying
Feminism is not impunity for any woman, whether she is president of the INE, a secretary of state, president of the Chamber of Deputies or president of the Republic.
We did not fight for a woman to reach power and reproduce the abuses we have fought for years.
President, during these years I have traveled roads, searched the earth, knocked on institutional doors and raised my voice for thousands of families going through the same tragedy.
