Isaias weakens after striking Florida and moving into Alabama

Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, then weakened as it moved across the Gulf Coast and into southern Alabama.

It made landfall with sustained winds of 169 kilometres per hour, and later became a post-tropical storm.

The storm brought flooding, downed trees and power lines, and more than 664,000 customers in Florida and Alabama were without electricity early Saturday.

Officials also warned that storm surge could affect parts of the coast, while heavy rain and strong winds threatened areas farther inland.

Florida and Alabama approved emergency declarations to make federal help available, and Florida deployed about 5,000 National Guard personnel.

Residents were urged to shelter and avoid dangerous roads.

The storm was expected to continue inland, with flash-flood risks.
