White House says Melania Trump secured Oleshky ceasefire

The White House says Melania Trump helped secure a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in southern Ukraine occupied by Russia since February 2022.

Before the war, Oleshky had about 24,000 residents, but around 1,700 to 2,000 people remain, many of them elderly.

Residents face shortages of food and medical supplies, and the city has been hit by military attacks.

The ceasefire is due to begin on October 29 and is intended to let humanitarian aid enter the city.

Teams from Russia and Ukraine would also help residents who want to leave travel to their chosen destination, with an American media organisation accompanying them.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine had publicly confirmed the agreement, so it was not clear whether the planned ceasefire would proceed.

The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water

It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible

Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine.
