Three in four French people say gas heating costs too much

Three in four people in France say gas heating costs too much, according to a survey by consumer group Que Choisir Ensemble.

The finding comes as the reference price for natural gas rose by 6.6% on 1 November.

For customers without fixed-price plans, bills are expected to increase by an average of €12 a month.

For a large gas-heated home, the annual bill has risen from about €1,000 in 2021 to €2,700 today.

Many households cannot afford to switch heating systems or improve insulation, and renters and people in shared buildings may not be able to make those decisions themselves.

Some are turning down the heating and sacrificing comfort to cope with the cost.

Que Choisir Ensemble is calling for targeted state aid and more stable support programs, and says the prices charged by professionals for heat pumps need better oversight.
