China wins 81.8% of global new ship orders in first nine months of 2026

China’s shipbuilding industry secured 81.8% of global new orders from January to September 2026.

The figures, released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, show China led the world in shipbuilding completions, new orders and orders on hand.

Chinese shipyards completed vessels totaling 58.05 million deadweight tons, up 50.7% from the same period a year earlier.

New orders reached 175.29 million deadweight tons, while the backlog stood at 399.13 million deadweight tons at the end of September.

China’s share of completed ships was 63.6%, and its share of orders on hand was 72.4%.

Green-powered ships made up 74.1% of global new orders in that category, a 5.7-percentage-point rise from January to June.

The figures show China’s strong position in the global shipbuilding market and its growing share of orders for cleaner-powered vessels.
