US lawmakers propose bill to block Russian diesel deal

US lawmakers introduced a bill to block a deal for Russian diesel announced by President Donald Trump.

The proposal was presented by Gregory Meeks, a Democratic member of the House of Representatives, and has support from Democrats and one Republican.

The bill would cancel US licenses allowing purchases of Russian energy and prevent new licenses from being issued.

It would also bar the US International Development Finance Corporation from investing in Russia’s energy sector and require the administration to impose sanctions on that sector.

The deal has already received a temporary US license, allowing operations involving Russian diesel until April 7, 2027.

Trump announced the deal on October 9, and the first planned delivery was 500,000 tonnes of fuel.

Congress must decide whether to advance the proposal, but no next step or timetable was stated.
