Indonesia plans egg powder factory to replace imports

Indonesia plans to build an egg powder factory with a state-owned company to supply the domestic market.

Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said the government aims to finish construction within one year and then stop importing egg powder.

Indonesia currently imports the product, which is made from eggs and can be used in processed foods.

The plan comes as officials also raise concerns about a wide gap between farm and retail egg prices: farmers receive about 20,000 to 21,000 rupiah per kilogram, while consumers pay about 40,000 to 45,000 rupiah.

Amran said the government has coordinated with law enforcement over the pricing issue, and retail prices began to fall after officials announced plans to act.

The government is also offering cheaper feed inputs to support farmers, but the factory site, cost and production capacity remain undecided publicly.

God willing, we will build it. We will build it together with state-owned enterprises. The factory will not take long to build. It will be finished in one year, then we will stop imports.
