Mexico finds six archaeological pieces bound for Britain at airport

Mexican authorities found six archaeological pieces during an inspection of export goods at Mexico City International Airport.

The pieces came from Veracruz and were being sent to Britain through Mexico’s postal service.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History classified them as part of Mexico’s cultural heritage, which is protected by law.

The law says these objects cannot be sold or lose their protected status over time.

The pieces remain in postal service custody while staff from the federal prosecutor’s office prepare to seize them and investigate their legal status.

The case matters because the objects are legally protected national heritage, not ordinary export goods.

Mexico says it has recovered about 16,500 cultural objects since 2018, and authorities continue inspections to protect its heritage.
