French retailers threaten to boycott talks over price negotiations
France’s retailers, including Carrefour and Leclerc, are threatening to boycott a meeting at Bercy to prepare for annual price talks with food producers.
The retailers’ federation says it will attend only if producers agree to more transparency on agricultural raw-material costs and different treatment for small and medium-sized firms.
The federation argues that smaller firms should not be treated like large global companies, and says it wants agreement on its demands before October 28.
The talks are due to begin on December 1, and retailers fear producers may seek unjustified price rises as inflation picks up.
The head of France’s agricultural cooperatives says farmers and producers are also under pressure from summer weather damage and higher energy costs, and urged retailers to sit down and negotiate.
He says even small price increases could help protect food production, factories, jobs and farmers’ markets, while the dispute could affect prices paid by consumers.

The Federation of Commerce and Distribution says retailers want transparency on agricultural raw-material costs and different treatment for small and medium-sized businesses.
The federation said the demands must be validated before October 28 and are non-negotiable.
The Agricultural Cooperatives association criticized the threat, saying the parties should meet to discuss the pressures facing farmers and cooperatives.
