Tesla renames its European driver-assistance system after regulator criticism
Tesla has renamed its driver-assistance system “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its European websites.
The system was previously branded “Full Self-Driving (Supervised),” a name German transport officials called somewhat misleading.
The technology can assist with tasks such as steering, braking and accelerating, but it does not take over the full driving task.
Drivers must remain attentive and responsible for the car.
Tesla is seeking approval to offer the system more widely in Europe, and Germany has supported its push for EU-wide approval.
Under an agreement described by Germany, the system would be limited to speeds up to 10% above the speed limit.
The EU approval process is still ongoing, and one source says a vote has been delayed until December at the earliest.
In the United States, Tesla continues to use the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) name.
Tesla has renamed its driver-assistance package “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its German website, replacing “Full Self-Driving (Supervised).”
Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport said the former name was misleading because the system does not take over the entire driving task and drivers must remain attentive.
Electrek reports that Tesla offered the new name during talks with Transport Minister Steffen Bilger in September; CNBC says the change came under pressure from German regulators.
The German ministry says the system may operate at up to 10% above speed limits, while Reuters reported that the version approved in the Netherlands allows speeds up to 50% above detected limits.
Tesla continues to sell the package as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” in the United States for $99 per month.
Tesla said it had 1.48 million active FSD subscriptions in its second-quarter earnings update, without specifying how many came from free trials or other incentives.
