Hamburg’s Elbschlosskeller mourns longtime guest Klaus, who died aged 86

Klaus, the Elbschlosskeller’s oldest regular, has died aged 86.

The bar on Hamburg’s St. Pauli district shared the news on Instagram and said it had taken time to process his death.

He was known for staying at the bar for long stretches, including almost four weeks in a row, according to the bar.

Klaus was a former sailor who also visited the nearby Golden Glove and sometimes slept at the Elbschlosskeller.

Staff remembered him as polite, friendly and always well dressed, even during long stays and when he had been drinking.

His absence could worry workers, who checked in about him when he had not appeared for weeks.

The bar says it will remember him as one of Hamburg’s original characters, but his cause of death has not been disclosed.
