Raw sugar rose 9.8% in October as robusta coffee fell 6%

In October, raw sugar futures rose 9.8%, while robusta coffee futures fell 6%.

Sugar prices were supported by concerns that heavy rain in Brazil, the world's top sugar producer, could disrupt this year's crop.

But on Friday, sugar fell as Brazil's currency weakened, encouraging producers to sell sugar priced in US dollars.

Brazilian sugar output fell 27.1% in the first half of October compared with a year earlier, and more rain is forecast next week.

The rain could slow the harvest and reduce the sugar content of cane, while raising the chance of an early end to the harvest.

Robusta prices faced pressure from improving supplies, rising exchange stocks and the start of harvesting in Vietnam, the top producer.

Arabica coffee, by contrast, lost 1.2% in October as supplies improved.
