CDU leaders meet as pressure mounts on Chancellor Friedrich Merz

Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is holding a leadership meeting on Sunday and Monday to discuss its program, identity and organization.

The meeting comes after the party lost its place in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament and has been polling below 20 percent.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz leads the CDU, and party figures increasingly link its problems to his leadership.

Several state leaders and youth party chief Johannes Winkel have publicly called for stronger decisions and results.

CDU leaders expect Merz to offer a convincing plan for how the party can recover.

The pressure is growing as state elections are due in several regions next year, with the first in April.

That leaves a short period for the national government to make progress on reforms before campaigning takes priority again.
