Student protests in Trento spark debate in regional council

Students from several Trento schools marched on October 21, showing support for teachers and calling for change in local schools.

They raised concerns about bureaucracy, limited resources, damaged classrooms and a lack of equipment, as well as access to education about sex and gender.

Teachers backed the students’ call for changes, including more investment and fewer administrative burdens.

The regional council also debated disorder reported at a protest by Tambosi students the previous day.

Majority and opposition councillors condemned violence, but disagreed over how to respond and whether the protests were being used for political purposes.

A Democratic Party councillor called proposals to use the army for police work “appalling” and warned against a security-focused response to the protests.
