Netflix adds 134 episodes of influential Canadian comedy show SCTV

Netflix has added 134 episodes of SCTV alongside a new documentary about the show.

SCTV was a Canadian sketch comedy series made by performers linked to Toronto’s Second City improv theatre.

It ran intermittently from 1976 to 1984 and built each episode around a fictional, rundown TV station in the town of Melonville.

Its cast included John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Andrea Martin, who later became widely known.

The show developed a following distinct from Saturday Night Live, which had drawn some Second City performers before SCTV began.

The documentary reunites surviving cast members and revisits the show’s history, though Dave Thomas says it leaves out some writers and musical acts.

Netflix’s episode release makes the series available to revisit, while the documentary offers an introduction to its legacy.
