Spain's Supreme Court gives Ábalos, García and Aldama 15 days to pay €647,000

Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered three men convicted in the mask-contracts case to pay about €647,000 in fines, forfeitures and compensation.

The men are former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, his former adviser Koldo García and businessman Víctor de Aldama, who were convicted over kickbacks linked to public contracts for masks.

The court says they have 15 days to pay, or it will take steps to collect the fines and compensation.

Their payments include fines and the recovery of €430,298 in gains the court linked to bribery; Ábalos and García must also compensate public companies Ineco and Tragsatec for payments to Ábalos’s former partner.

The court set maximum prison terms of 16 and a half years for Ábalos and 15 years for García.

Aldama’s four-and-a-half-year prison sentence remains suspended on conditions: he must report to the court every six months and confirm within 15 days that he agrees to do one year of community service.
