Singer Michelle says she was homeless as a teenager

German singer Michelle says she experienced violence and neglect while growing up.

She and her mother sometimes sought refuge in women’s shelters, but the family did not find lasting safety.

Michelle says she later lived on the streets and stole cans of ravioli to eat.

In 1993, at age 20, she won the ZDF Hit Parade with her song “Und heut’ Nacht will ich tanzen.”

The performance helped launch a career that made her one of Germany’s best-known Schlager singers.

She recalls that her first performance fee of 2,000 marks felt like a great deal of money after years of hardship.

She shared these memories on a podcast; no further steps were announced.
