Two Pakistani officers guarding polio workers killed in shooting

Suspected militants killed two police officers guarding polio workers in Mohmand, northwestern Pakistan, on Tuesday.

A third officer was wounded when attackers on a motorcycle opened fire as the officers travelled to a nearby village.

The officers were protecting a door-to-door vaccination team during a polio immunisation campaign.

Militants in Pakistan have regularly attacked vaccination drives and the police who protect health workers, spreading false claims about the vaccines.

Pakistan’s nationwide campaign aims to vaccinate 24 million children and began on Monday.

The attackers fled, and no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Separately, four polio workers were abducted in another district the previous day, and the provincial governor called for their safe release.
