Manga artist challenges Japan's revised Imperial House Law in court

Manga artist Yoshinori Kobayashi has sued the Japanese government in Tokyo over a recent change to the Imperial House Law.

The revised law, which took effect on October 24, allows the adoption of certain men from former imperial families who have no spouse or children and are at least 15.

The eligible men are male-line descendants of 11 imperial branches that left the imperial family in 1947.

Kobayashi argues that limiting eligibility by family background violates Article 14 of Japan's Constitution, which guarantees equality under the law.

He is asking the court to declare the revised law invalid and award him 1 million yen in damages.

Kobayashi says the system creates a special status based on family background, and argues that a court should review it.

The Tokyo District Court will consider his challenge; the sources do not say when a decision is expected.
