Liberty’s inconsistent season ends with a semifinal sweep by the Dream

The New York Liberty’s season ended when the Atlanta Dream swept them in the WNBA semifinals.

That came just 10 days after New York swept the Minnesota Lynx, becoming the first No.

8 seed to eliminate a No.

1 seed in league history.

The Liberty had begun the season as title favorites after bringing back Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu and adding players including Satou Sabally.

Injuries and other absences kept key players out for long stretches, so the team’s preferred starting group played together for only 25 minutes.

Stewart had a strong season, but the Liberty struggled to find consistent form.

Coach Chris DeMarco also changed lineups during the season.

The uneven year and early playoff exit could prompt a major shake-up, though no specific next steps are stated.
