Brazilian lawmakers threaten impeachment after voting hours are extended
Brazilian lawmakers Nikolas Ferreira and Lucas Pavanato raised the prospect of impeachment in 2027 after a court order changed voting hours during the 2026 presidential runoff.
Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered voting to continue until 7 p.m.
at polling places where voting had not yet closed.
The order followed a request from President Lula’s coalition, which cited reduced bus service in several cities and reports that some polling places had closed at 5 p.m.
Zanin said ballots from places that had already closed would still be counted, and electoral authority head Kassio Nunes Marques confirmed the order would be followed.
Ferreira and Pavanato criticized the decision, while Kim Kataguiri called for the election to be annulled, saying both candidates could benefit.
The votes are to be tallied under the order’s terms, while Zanin said any further inquiries and legal consequences would be considered later.
