Google expands automatic workout detection to more than 100 activities

Google is expanding automatic workout tracking to more than 100 activities, up from 10.

The update covers Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5, as well as Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge.

Google Health can now recognize activities such as swimming, strength training, golf and team sports without users having to start tracking each one themselves.

The system can use exercise history, usual routines and past corrections, and can also use location if the user allows it.

Google says the extra context makes detection nearly twice as accurate and cuts missed activities by more than half.

Sessions generally need to last at least 15 minutes and keep the heart rate elevated before they are logged, with a summary expected within about 30 minutes.

The Google Health 5.11 update is rolling out, with the app already widely available on iOS and still rolling out on Android.
