Diana Fox Carney visits Halifax ahead of ocean conference she will chair

Diana Fox Carney is visiting Halifax as Canada’s Ocean Envoy to meet people helping plan an international ocean conference.

She was named the country’s first Ocean Envoy and chair of the Our Ocean Conference, set for Halifax next May.

The conference invites governments, businesses and conservation groups to make voluntary commitments to protect the ocean.

Since its launch in 2014, it has raised about US$180-billion in commitments.

Canada’s gathering aims to support the goal of protecting 30 per cent of the oceans by 2030.

Fox Carney’s unpaid appointment has drawn questions about how it was made, including whether other candidates were considered; the government has not answered that question.

Some ocean conservation experts say her access to the prime minister could help bring more government attention to ocean issues.

She will chair the conference on May 10 and 11, while details about her itinerary and the length of her appointment have not been provided.

a good thing that we have someone so close to the Prime Minister who’s going to be thinking about oceans quite a bit.
